Forgotten Prisoner becomes Multimillionaire for his Suffering

Steven Slevin was locked up for drunk driving in 2005 a perfectly healthy man and came out 2 years later with several health problems in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This was caused by the negligence of the jailers that were supposed to keep take care of the prisoners. He was isolated from all the other inmates at the Dona Ana County which caused post-traumatic stress. Slevin was separated from other inmates because of his case of mental illness, but that just made it worse. He came out of jail with a long beard, bed sores, bad teeth, and weight lose. The county apologized to Steven and claims they have made improvements since the past seven years with the detention center staffing, training, facilities and procedures. Steven continues to have several medical issues and is currently fighting lung cancer. Due to these circumstances he was put into he was awarded $15.5 million dollars.

Although prisoners are put in jail for punishment purposes, it doesn't mean that should get some attention. It was completely irresponsible as to how the county took care of Steven Slevin, leading him to several health issues, mentally and physically.

  1. That's so sad to read, regardless of the fact that he was in prison he did not deserve that treatment and those who run jails and penitentiaries should follow their duties rather than treat the prisoners like animals ,which is clearly how they see them.

  6. This is very sad, especially because the offense of drunk driving is not as bad as something like murder or kidnapping (in which case we might not sympathize with the criminal). I hope he recovers!
